Escalation in the Middle East: Iran Launches Missile Attacks, Explosions Heard Over Jerusalem

Blasts over Jerusalem as Israel says Iran launch missiles – DW – 06/13/2025An explosion caused by a projectile strike illuminates the skyline in Tel Aviv, Israel, early Saturday, June 14, 2025. The geopolitical landscape of the Middle East has dramatically shifted once again, as Iran has unleashed a new wave of missile attacks on Israel, with reports of explosions echoing over Jerusalem and other major cities like Tel Aviv. This significant escalation follows what Iran claims were unprovoked Israeli airstrikes on its nuclear facilities and military leaders, which reportedly resulted in the deaths of several high-ranking generals and nuclear scientists.

A Tit-for-Tat Escalation

Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has asserted responsibility for these “crushing and precise” strikes, targeting what it describes as dozens of Israeli military centers and airbases. While Iranian state media initially suggested hundreds of missiles were launched in three separate waves, the Israeli military has indicated a lower number, with many successfully intercepted by its robust air defense systems, including the famed Iron Dome. However, the impact has been tangible, with at least one confirmed fatality and over 20 injuries reported in Rishon Lezion, south of Tel Aviv, along with significant damage to residential areas. The United States military has also confirmed its involvement in assisting Israel with missile interceptions.

Israel’s response has been equally defiant. The Defense Minister has issued a stark warning that “Tehran will burn” if the attacks persist, and the Israeli military has threatened further strikes on targets within the Iranian capital. This latest volley comes after Israel’s “Operation Rising Lion” on June 13, a preemptive measure targeting Iranian nuclear sites and military commanders, aimed at curbing Iran’s nuclear ambitions.

Iran’s Missile Muscle

Iran boasts the largest ballistic missile program in the Middle East, a key component of its defense strategy given decades of international sanctions. Its arsenal comprises a diverse range of short- and medium-range ballistic missiles (SRBMs and MRBMs). Notable among them are:

Solid-fueled missiles:This category includes the Fateh-110 family (Fateh-110, Fateh-313, Zolfaghar), the Kheibar Shekan, and the recently unveiled Qassem Basir, named after General Qassem Soleimani. The Qassem Basir is touted to have a range of 1,200 kilometers and features advanced guidance with a maneuverable reentry vehicle designed to evade missile defenses.
Liquid-fueled missiles:These include variants of the Shahab-3, Ghadr, and Khorramshahr.
Hypersonic capabilities: Iran also claims to have developed a hypersonic variant of the Kheibar Shekan, named Fattah, capable of flying at speeds and trajectories that make interception incredibly challenging.

Iran’s strategy leverages mobile transporter-erector-launchers (TELs) and extensive underground missile facilities to enhance the readiness and survivability of its missile forces, making them a significant threat in the region.

The Widening Circle of Conflict

The repercussions of this escalating conflict are already being felt across the region and potentially globally. Syria and Lebanon temporarily closed their airspace, now reopened. Jordan reported injuries from falling debris during the attacks. The UN nuclear watchdog has confirmed impacts on Iran’s Isfahan nuclear site but fortunately no increase in radiation levels. Satellite imagery is beginning to reveal damage to Iranian ballistic missile arsenals at bases in Kermanshah and Tabriz.

Beyond the immediate military impact, the global economy is bracing for a potential shockwave. Oil prices have surged, with concerns about disruptions to vital shipping lanes like the Strait of Hormuz. International aviation has also seen significant disruptions, with flight paths adjusted and many flights canceled across the Middle East.

The current situation remains incredibly fluid and volatile. The international community is urging de-escalation, but with both sides demonstrating a strong resolve to retaliate, the path forward is fraught with danger. The stakes are incredibly high, not just for the immediate parties involved, but for regional stability and potentially global peace.
